The word apologetics derives from the Greek word apologia, which was originally used of a speech of defense, or an answer given in reply. In the above passage, apologia is the original Greek word that was translated as "an answer" in English.
Apologetics in our context may be simply defined as the defense of the Christian faith.
When challenged or asked, the Biblical mandate is for the believer to give a coherent, competent, well-reasoned defense of what they believe to anyone who asks. Apologetics training is central to competent ambassadorship for Christ, yet most churches unfortunately never devote any effort to this area.
